Tinyfolk

Tinyfolk is the ongoing musical project of dapper gentleman Russ Woods, of Bloomington Indiana. Tinyfolk started as a lo-fi recording project in 2005 when he moved back in with his parents’ in Newburgh, Indiana.
Before called Tinyfolk, the project called A Pilgrimage to Save This Human Race. At the time Russ only had a few friends in town and in order to stave off boredom and simultaneously export creativity he bought a tape recorder downloaded a free drum machine program from the internet. He would play the beats through his computer speakers, use chords from a garage sale organ, and mix those with lyrics he wrote during geology class. Eventually he started writing songs on a toy piano then an autoharp, followed by a soprano ukulele to which he self-tought himself to play.
Later in 2005, around August, Russ moved to Bloomington, Indiana, with only an iBook and started recording songs on his laptop. Around this time Russ bought a baritone ukulele and recorded two albums within the first following months.
The first album, called The Cat Album, was a concept album featuring thirty songs about cats less then a minute in length, eventually being called 36 Songs About Cats. His second album, Love Doesn’t Grow on Trees, was soon to follow. This one was made after meeting his then wonderful girlfriend, Meghan, who contributed vocals on the album along with keys. She continued to be a part of the Tinyfolk since.
Then there were following releases; A split with the band The Encyclopedias called Little Mice and Other Things that Go Skitter Skitter, then came Platapeasawallaland: A Rainy-Day Owlbum, finished in the later winter/early spring of 2007. Tinyfolk did a west coast tour with the band Real Live Tigers that summer.
His songs are cute and sweet as if candy canes and chocolates could play songs. Everyone knows they can’t though since both cannot get along long enough to get an act together. Tinyfolk, however, has the ability to get both candy canes and chocolates to work together and create music that warms your heart. Russ’s songs are the variety that you would listen to in a VW bug driving a short distance on the freeway, in a light rain, to see your best friend. His more electronic songs are splendid on account of them giving a slight break to the sweeter feel most of his songs emit. Both the folk and electronic style of songs sound as if the same amount of quality are placed into each. Fortunately, for both, his lyrics tend to retain a bit of adorable goofyness.
At this time Russ resides in Bloomington while finishing up his masters At ISU and living with his Fiancé Meghan.
