Slow Dance Fast – 8/31/2007

By Off Tempo   -  10 August 2009

Slow Dance FastSlow Dance Fast was probably my favorite band of the Tri-Cities when I was there. I think my other was, Javier Madrigal and the Unattracives. We were both very big Elivis Costello fans but he was probably the biggest, which is why the Unattractives seemed appropriate. I recall researching the name to see if it had already been taken and found information about Elvis Craprillo and the Unattractives.

Steve and Nick did a brilliant job with this band and I probably have at least two more recordings of them playing but I believe this one is my favorite.  Even though I was always excited to go to 321, I was especially excited to see Slow Dance Fast play. They were such a good band and they set the mood to be very warm and fun in an incredibly mellow way. Their songs never seemed at all serious but the way that many of the songs were performed felt like a bit of a contradiction. They were a bit of why I find so much pleasure in listening to serious sounding songs with lyrics that are charmingly absurd.

Since moving away from the Tri-Cities I don’t see much of Steve and Nick anymore. I don’t actually think they live there since they might be attending a university at this time but I still miss them regardless. When I saw Steve a few months ago I felt a relief of seeing an old friend that I’ve missed for almost a year and a half. Listening to old recordings tend to have the same effect with conjuring up nostalgia.

When they played it was a friend reunion; all of us Tri-Cities music kids would come out to get together.
