It was pretty cold outside. It takes a while for the evening to warm up in the Northwest. The mornings can be chilly but things can get warm about mid-day but that’s not a guarantee. Since it was cold in the New Crompton we all kind of stood up and let his groove-music motivate our bodies to move
Spencer Owen was on tour with Birds by Snow from Berkeley, California. He played his songs off of an iPod and accompany it by soloing with a melodica and playing a drum kit for a song or two. The individuals who knew who Spencer Owen were excited as hell to see him play, which leached into whomever else hadn’t experienced the Owen. I was one of those individuals and my heart was serenaded by his soulful lyrics and beats.
He’s funny. His stage banter is funny and the lyrical content of his songs were funny at parts. A few of his songs reminded me of what I’d hear on those clean clear-channel radio stations when I worked at Goodwill. Songs that usually consist of the “Hits from the 80′s and 90′s” style of radio stations that are the only thing certain businesses are allowed to play. It was as if he extracted elements from a few of those hit songs and made them work together and form something that I had more affinity for.
