I, Cordyceps

Completely solid rock music. Not rockabilly, not rock’n roll, just rock music. They’re really good.

They’ve been practicing since August… Actually, I think they’ve been practicing before then. I recorded one show of the band in August performing in a bar in the University District of Seattle. At that point the band had two guitarists, two bassists, and one drummer. I thought it would have been funny for the band to have a second drummer, then they could be two bands that played on stage at the same time. Or even the band could break up on stage and have a musical battle, the outcome would be to see who of the weak would have to leave the band.

Through this recording it’s a bit difficult to capture the visual element of rocking out. I don’t know what to say other than I really like I, Cordyceps. They have the structure of a rock band with the heart of 1985.

Cordyceps is that spore that gets into the heads of ants, makes them go crazy, gets it kicked out of its colony, then it climbs to the top of a blade of grass and then a mushroom grows out of the ant. Then it does the same thing all over again.

I’ve wondered about how those things work and what mechanisms of the spore are involved in manipulating the actions of an infected host. Parasites can do the same kind of mind-control thing. Parasites are dumb though, they’re one of the many dumb entities on Earth. When I say dumb, I should really just say that they have no notable intelligence other than that similar to any other insect you can think of off the top of your head. Yet, some parasites can influence their hosts behavior. There’s a liver fluke (Dicrocoelium Dendriticum) that controls the mind of an ant and makes it hop to the top of a blade of grass. There’s more to it if you’d like to read more on the internet. It’s fascinating.

You could say that this band really gets in your head.

This recording is part one of a three part live recording series also featuring Cold Lake and Council of Lions.
