Nu Jazz is a genre that’s been mostly lacking of interest to any music community of the most common sectors that you can think of. Think about it, what brilliant Nu Jazz musicians can you list from the top of your brain?
Heatwarmer is an incredibly talented five piece Nu Jazz of Seattle, Washington. Their lyrics are often of a psychedelic and fantasy like in content, goofy and fun. Each member has experience playing jazz music (explains their Nu Jazz style) and instead of dropping their talents after high school, they stuck with it.
This night was different though.
Although there have been many Heatwarmer shows I’ve been to, this one everyone kind of knew what was up but not everyone knew what to expect. There was a slough of jazz musicians called the Extended Universe that Heatwarmer had arranged to play with them during their set. Naturally this combination would seem very fit but from what the second half of the set sounded like with Extended Universe, blew everyone away.
It was kind of mesmerizing in a way. It was something I was completely giddy about beforehand but was ecstatic about when the two bands were actually playing together. Kind of like when Alfred Nobel mixed nitroglycerin with sodium carbonate and decided to patent it.
