For our RSS subscribers
Off Tempo will be under maintenance and upgrades for the next weeks time. We will return with about 6 new live recording releases (that we’re behind on), a new featured video, a featured article, and a new website. Also a news section for any other relevant underground music business.
We’ve also started a tumblr blog that you can read about behind the scene’s stuff at. Also, if Off Tempo explodes at any point (i.e. the website breaking) you can read what’s going on there.
See you soon!

Great Job is folk / bluegrass band from Tucson, Arizona. Re-listening to their performance after seeing them led to the realization that they may be playing music as a bluegrass band but everything they play was of a rhythm that was either rock, punk, or in some cases hip-hop electro- citing the MIA cover of Paper Planes. It felt like Great Job could very well translate any song into a bluegrass sounding tune. They covered a few other songs that I couldn’t quite identify the origin of (I feel like in ...

Ben Barnett doesn’t play live much anymore. This seems to have been the case since Kind of Like Spitting disbanded in 2006. I’ve heard that Ben does play shows every once in a while and this particular show was one of those occasions (as of this time he has a band that I cannot recall the name of).
At the time of the show it was confirmed that Ben could play this show. Ben came in seeming in a rush to play on account of tardiness. He seems like he has ...

Foot Ox was on one of those “moving tours”. What could be defined as a moving tour- or at least what I mean by it- is when a band or a few of it’s members go on tour and their final destination is the place they are choosing to live. In this case, it was Teague and maybe a few other members moving to Portland, Oregon. I think ...

North America is a band from New Mexico. I hear from their MySpace setting is that at the time of this writing they have relocated in New York City.
North America is a combination digital effects from a sampler or keyboard mixed with a drum set. No vocals aside from having to speak sentences and banter in-between songs. If I weren’t so tired during that evening I would have stayed in the living room instead of sit down in the kitchen and draw.
I really liked the setup that North America had. ...

Council of Lions is a three-piece ensemble of incredible.
They began practicing about a year ago (I think) and played an impromptu set at the now defunct house in Bellingham, WA, called Friendship City. I’ve seen them four times and each time I’ve noticed that they’ve shown steps up musicianship. Think of a metaphor having to do with walking upwards on a staircase. At this point I had not seen Council of Lions play since- I think- sometime in July when hey performed at the Wild Rose in Seattle.
This time they had ...

I think this was the first time that PETS played and up to this point I had only heard Rachael talk about how they’ve been practicing. That she was kind of nervous about singing in the band. The band consisted of Steve Hilmes, Tim Leingang, Rachael Thompson, Andy Evans, and Pat Mackey. I believe the lineup of the band is slightly different but I’m not quite sure.
Despite the fact that I missed most of theri set after friend Jessie said “Hey, Kenneth, do you want to go drink at the ...

This show was what believe to be Cold Lake’s second show. The night before I saw them play at a house show in Bellingham, Washington with I, Cordyceps and Junk Bones. From what I’ve gathered, the band has been practicing since this last October.
Cold Lake is a combination of friends who met Bellingham, Washington, around the early 2000’s. Members of the band consist of Corey Brewer (vocals, jokes), James Burns (guitar), Clyde Petersen (bass), and Jeff Mitchell (drums). In two months time Cold Lake has composed songs that are of such ...

Completely solid rock music. Not rockabilly, not rock’n roll, just rock music. They’re really good.
They’ve been practicing since August… Actually, I think they’ve been practicing before then. I recorded one show of the band in August performing in a bar in the University District of Seattle. At that point the band had two guitarists, two bassists, and one drummer. I thought it would have been funny for the band to have a second drummer, then they could be two bands that played on stage at the same time. Or even ...
